“अष्टाध्यायी जगन्माता अमरकोशो जगत्पिता” (Aṣṭādhyāyī is the mother of the world, and Amarakośa is the father) is a popular saying. Aṣṭādhyāyī and Amarakośa are extremely useful tools for those who wish to gain a mastery of Sanskrit language and the śāstras. In olden times, it was a common practice to teach children to memorise these two texts at a very young age, even before formal learning began. Equipped with these fixed in memory, as they studied the language and śāstras, the children learnt to apply the sūtras easily, and also had a phenomenal vocabulary.
This practice of memorisation has lost importance in recent times, due to various reasons. Vyoma Labs is attempting to revive the method of regular oral learning and memorisation through various courses such as Daily chants, Gita chanting, etc. As a part of that effort, this course will train the students to memorise and recite the Amarakośa verses from memory. This course will be useful to students who are studying, or would like to study Sanskrit language and literature at any level.
Important Note – The teacher will only indicate the meaning of the main word and the number of synonyms of each. With practice and study of various kāvyas, students will automatically know how to apply the words learnt through Amarakośa.
The course is meant for:
Interested learners of all age groups, who are committed to learning and memorising the Amarakośa.
Schedule of Classes – Every Weekday (Monday to Friday), 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM IST.
Start Date – 18 Nov 2019
An oral examination will be conducted at the end of the course. Interested students can take up the exams and get a certificate if they are successful.
The course is meant for all who want to learn chanting the Amarakośa verses in an authentic way, and for those who want to memorise the Amarakośa.
2. I want to learn specific chapters for a competition. Will that be taught to me?
This course will cover the select portions of the Amarakosha, focussing on the most important, popular and useful words. You can join the class and learn the portions in the order taught there.
If you want specific, personalised coaching for any competitions, please write to us at email@example.com to know about our paid one-on-one courses.
3. Will I get individual attention from the teacher?
The teacher will teach the verses, and select a few students to repeat the verses as he teaches. Others are expected to repeat along with these students and learn. There will be opportunities to ask if you have any questions/doubts.
In every class, students will also be given a chance to recite previously taught verses. In case there are many students taking part, the teacher will try to ensure that all students get a chance in order. If, due to time constraints, all students cannot be accommodated in a single class, they may be given an opportunity to chant in the next few classes.
4. Will the course cover all the verses of the Amarakośa?
In the first phase of the course, selected portions will only be covered. Based on the student interest and feedback, there may be future courses which cover the remaining portions of the text.
The classes are conducted online through a tool called Gotowebinar. Students can join the classes through their computers or smartphones.
2. Are the classes live or pre-recorded?
The classes are live, conducted at the time announced above. After each class, recording of the class will be uploaded on the portal. Those who cannot attend the live classes can catch up through the recordings.
