Chandas shastra is one amongst the six vedangas. Chandas sutra is the first text that is found that elaborates the poetic metres. Vritta Ratnakara is another treatise written by Kedara Bhatta which does also introduces the samskrit poetic metres.
Knowledge of Chandas is essential for the study of Sanskrit Poetry. Also, important types of Chandas are prescribed for study in almost every Sanskrit examination, starting from the High School level. Hence, this course is sure to be of great utility for all Sanskrit students.
It starts with the basic concepts of Aksharas, laghu, guru, yati, varnavritta, matravritta, etc. It explains the eight ganas and ways to identify / remember the ganas. After this, 16 important, very popular samavrittas are explained in detail. It includes lakshana, laghu-guru prastara and examples for each. There are also exercises given for each lesson. Working out these would enable the students to achieve mastery over this very important topic.
This course sheds light on some important Sama vrittas. They are -
Indravajra, Upendravajra, Upajati, Rathoddhata, Shalini, Vamshastha, Bhujangaprayata, Totaka, Vasantatilaka, Malini, Panchachamara, Shikharini, Mandakranta, Shardulavikridita, Sragdhara, Anushtup.
