The well known meaning of the word ‘Aditya’ is the Sun. Hridayam means the heart. ‘The Heart of Aditya’ means the real significance or meaning behind the worship of Sun or the meditation on Sun God.
Aditya-hridayam is seen in the sarga 105 of Yuddhakanda of Valmiki Ramayana. It contains 31 shlokas. The context of the shloka is – Sage Agastya initiates Rama through this sanatana-mantra and Rama attained victory over Ravana after doing this worship.
This set of shlokas is viewed as an independent text and millions of devotees recite it every day. This stotra is usually taught to children and students for health, success and achievement in life.. (आरोग्यं भास्कारादिच्छेत्)
Apart from the Bhaava, many commentators have written philosophical level commentaries on Adityahridayam.
